Latin in the litter; arrows

Revived with saké, Blackthorne rides in Mariko's litter while she walks beside it. They switch to Latin, once he warns her the captain of Grays understands Portuguese. He calls her brave and beautiful; no one has ever called her beautiful, and she feels a warmth she has only read of in pillow-books. She teaches him: a wife's right to manage all money, the law that lets a husband kill a wife found alone with a man, the Emperor one hundred and seven generations from the gods. "Love is a Christian word"; duty is what they have. Mariko traps the captain into answering Latin ("Ita, amen"): he is Kiyama's man, ordered to kill the pirate when the ambush comes. Arrows take him through the throat. Two shafts lodge in Toranaga's hidden armour; he tears off wig and hat, and Browns and Grays hack each other apart. Two Grays escape to warn Ishido.

A litter ride used as a classroom, with Latin as the private channel that will carry the love story. Clavell alternates lessons in money, law and lineage with the trap for the captain, so the exposition is itself a weapon. The reveal of Toranaga under the wig ends the chapter's calm mid-sentence.
