Anna Quangel’s Reunion
She is already reunited with him. She is where he is. Wherever that may be.
Summary
Months pass, and Anna Quangel, unaware her husband is already dead, waits in her cell to be reunited with him. The warders, who have grown fond of her, keep up the lie that Otto 'sends his love'. She knits socks for soldiers all day, reading the war's worsening turns as proof that she and Otto will soon be freed or amnestied, and dreams of a gentler Otto and of more children. Fearless now since destroying her own cyanide, she stays calm even through Berlin's bombing raids, when locked prisoners are left screaming in unguarded cells. Mid-dream of her reunion with Otto, a bomb reduces her wing of the prison to rubble, killing her instantly — and so, at last, she is reunited with him.
Analysis
The lie that sustains Anna becomes the novel's last mercy, and her death mid-dream grants her the reunion the state denied her in life. Fallada refuses a clean martyrdom: her end is accidental, anonymous, indistinguishable from any other bombed Berliner's.
