Part 4 · Chapter 65
The Trial: The Verdict
Fuck Hitler! Fuck Göring! Fuck Goebbels, you piece of shit! Fuck Streicher!
Summary
During a recess the guards leave Otto Quangel unwatched in the emptied courtroom, and he dozes before waking to find old Judge Fromm signalling from the gallery rail. Fromm walks off, leaving a small package on the railing; Quangel retrieves and pockets it unseen. Rather than wait meekly for the verdict, he spoils the court's satisfaction: asked why he is out of his seat, he shouts 'Fuck Hitler! Fuck Göring! Fuck Goebbels, you piece of shit! Fuck Streicher!' before a guard's punch knocks him out. Judge Feisler is forced to pass sentence on both Quangels in absentia, denied the pleasure of watching their faces. Waking in his cell, Quangel finds the package still on him: a vial and a typed note reading 'Cyanide, kills painlessly in seconds. Hide it in your mouth. Your wife will be similarly provided for. Destroy this note!' He swallows the note, lodges the vial in his cheek, and feels, for the first time, genuinely free.
Analysis
Fromm's smuggled mercy reframes the sentencing scene: state ritual is undercut by a private act of decency performed in plain sight. Quangel's tirade denies Feisler his theatre, and the vial converts a death sentence into a choice, the novel's last redefinition of freedom under Nazi control.
