The Fateful Monday

On a single fateful Monday — Klebs sentenced to a year, Borkhausen to two, Baldur Persicke home from Napola school to see his father, and Trudel Hergesell miscarrying after a fall at Erkner Station — Anna Quangel lies feverish with 'flu while she and Otto argue over whether he should drop that day's postcards. A messenger calls Otto in to cover an injured foreman; he leaves with two cards still in his pocket, kissing Anna goodbye 'never to see each other again in freedom'. At the factory he nearly destroys the cards in a stall but can't, and stows them in his satchel, whose torn seam he never mended. Mid-shift, driven to see what his cards do to people, he engineers their 'discovery', watching a worker's terror spread through the shop until every door is sealed. When the shift refuses to end, Inspector Escherich arrives with Obergruppenführer Prall and arrests 'Foreman Quangel . . . on urgent suspicion of treason.'

The catalogue of unrelated Monday disasters, Trudel's miscarriage, Baldur's homecoming, two sentencings, dilutes the coming arrest into just one more item on a bad day, which is the point: history doesn't pause for its protagonists. Quangel's fatal curiosity, wanting to see his own effect, reads as pride outrunning caution.
