Otto Quangel Grows Uncertain

Otto and Anna Quangel ride home in silence after a near-arrest at the station, saved by a stationmaster's grudge against a querulant named Millek. Anna weeps quietly in the kitchen, then begs Otto in the darkened parlour to stop dropping cards, or at least let her take over. Otto refuses to end the campaign, since the cards cannot simply stop appearing, but admits for the first time that he feels 'unsure', that enemies surround him where he cannot see them. He blames Ulrich's family for the near-catch, then panics over evidence: he pours the ink down a drain, orders Anna to burn every card and scrap of paper, and checks his fingers for stains. Anna finds one and rubs it away. Calmed, Otto says he wants to live to see the regime collapse, and Anna insists their luck has held, not turned. Otto agrees: 'We're here, we're at liberty. For the time being.'

Fear finally catches up with the Quangels' method. The near-arrest exposes how much their survival has depended on luck, and Otto's admission of uncertainty registers a shift: the machine-like foreman beginning to crack. His compulsive purging of ink and paper foreshadows the one piece of evidence he forgets.
