The First Card is Dropped

Walking to drop the first postcard, Otto and Anna Quangel argue over where; at Anna's urging they abandon Greifswalder Strasse for the greater distance of the Alexanderplatz, but Otto, unsettled by her company, instead ducks into a bright office building on Neue Königstrasse. Anna waits by a shop window, sick with fear, imagining him arrested and rehearsing what she would do, while he climbs the stairs past an indifferent porter and a rushing office boy, gloved hand ready, wary of the building's elevator. He sets the card on a windowsill between floors. Descending, he hears a door open above him and fears discovery, but reaches the lobby safely amid a crowd of factory workers leaving through the courtyard. He rejoins Anna — 'Done! No one saw me!' — and they hurry on together so he can still make his shift, both throwing a last look back at the building neither of them will ever forget.

A single set-piece rendered almost entirely through nerve: a porter, an elevator, a rushing office boy, timed against Otto's refusal to run. It earns the reader's trust that Quangel's caution works, building suspense from procedure rather than incident, while Anna's vigil at the shop window becomes its own quiet ordeal.
