Summary
Before dawn, Trudel walks Frau Rosenthal, marked with her yellow star, to Judge Fromm's door, narrowly missing the Persicke brothers as they leave to dump the battered burglars. Baldur has bullied Borkhausen and Enno Kluge into silence with threats and fifty marks each; one brother drags Borkhausen home to Otti, who secretly pockets his money, while the other beats Enno unconscious in Friedrichshain before abandoning him with the reluctant Frau Gesch, who feeds him and steers him toward an old flame, Tutti. Meanwhile Fromm settles Frau Rosenthal in his late daughter's room, feeding her tea and bread and laying down strict rules of hospitality: she must stay hidden, live by night, and never leave without consequence. He tells her, gently but coldly, that her husband, Siegfried, is safe but unreachable in Moabit Prison. Alone with her jewellery and unsendable letters, Rosenthal spends the day sliding between memory and panic, addressing herself as 'Sara', dreading the fifteen hours of solitude ahead.
Analysis
Two forms of shelter sit side by side, Fromm's principled, almost inhuman rigour and Frau Gesch's grudging, transactional kindness, and Fallada declines to rank them. Rosenthal's monologue to 'Sara' in the mirror marks the novel's fullest entry into a victim's own consciousness.
